Automatic optical inspection (AOI)

  • automated visual inspection
  • finding and reporting errors using image processing methods
  • control of the production of electronic assemblies
  • reliable test procedure

Two types of image acquisition using the AOI method

With regard to the types of image acquisition, the AOI system differentiates between a camera-based and a scanner-based method.

In order to examine the entire area, both AOI methods either move the camera over the assemblies or move the assemblies below the camera. There is the option of either manually inserting the circuit boards into the AOI system and removing them again after the test (stand-alone) or having the AOI device check them automatically on a conveyor belt (inline).

Artificial light sources support AOI

An artificial light source is necessary to ensure a good view for checking the components. It is possible to either illuminate the circuit boards directly from above or to illuminate them from the side using indirect light. It is also possible to use multi-colored lighting to view the assembled components. In order to prevent possible sources of interference from the outside, most AOI systems have an almost completely closed panel.

In electronics production, the AOI process is used particularly in the area of SMT assembly. As a professional EMS service provider, Grundig Business Systems also offers the inspection of components using AOI.
